This $5 1882 Brown Back from the National Bank of Commerce in St. Louis, Missouri is identified by Charter #4178 M. While it may look like a typical national bank note upon first blush, careful examination of the overprint will increase not only your confusion, but likely also your interest. For the first time in nearly half a century, we have noticed that two of the six digits within the note's serial number have been deliberately removed and replaced.
