This $5 1882 Brown Back from the National Bank of Commerce in St. Louis, Missouri is identified by Charter #4178 M. While it may look like a typical national bank note upon first blush, careful examination of the overprint will increase not only your confusion, but likely also your interest. For the first time in nearly half a century, we have noticed that two of the six digits within the note's serial number have been deliberately removed and replaced. As this was unique to our experience, we reached out to other experts in the field, specifically those with a focus and interest in nationals. Time and time again, the numismatic scholars arrived at the same independent conclusion....this note was likely stolen! In an effort to avoid being caught by the only identifiable feature of a banknote, its serial number was changed. Economic hardships were hardly uncommon as our nation pushed forward during this era so we can guess it may have been done out of desperation, but we know that with the quality of the work
