$1 1928 Legal Tender, Fr. 1500 Red Seal Funny Back Puerto Rico Very Fine
This Series 1928 $1 Legal Tender Note, Fr. 1500, features George Washington’s portrait, red Treasury seal and serial numbers, and the distinctive “Funny Back” reverse with its prominent ONE lettering. Bearing the Woods–Woodin signatures, it represents the only small-size $1 United States Note series, giving it a special place in a small-size type collection.
Although dated 1928, these notes were produced in 1933. Much of the issue remained in Treasury storage for approximately fifteen years before being released in Puerto Rico during 1948–1949, creating the type’s familiar “Puerto Rico” association. That unusual delayed release adds historical interest to an already distinctive design.
Offered in Very Fine condition, this example retains an attractive overall appearance despite a few edge splits and an internal split along part of the horizontal fold line. Please review the photographs carefully for these condition details. A collectible example of an unusual chapter in American currency history.
