$1000 1840 Bank of the United States POST NOTE One Thousand Payable in NY Ch CU

+

By the time this post note was issued, the Bank of the United States was actually operating under a Pennsylvania charter which it had obtained in 1836. The bank failed in 1841. The note illustrates the bank's headquarters in Philadelphia flanked by portraits of important American figures. It has stamps noting the sporadic dividends paid out during 1840s  as part of the liquidation process on this note that's payable in New York. A high quality representative of this historic institution.
