$5 1988 FRN UNIQUE Canceled Plate Print. The oversized note was printed from canceled plates with four large green “Xs” on the back and four large black “Xs” on the front. The note is devoid of the overprint. Authenticated and graded by PMG as Choice Uncirculated 63EPQ and designated “cancelled plate print.” Interestingly, although not annotated by PMG, is that the note originated from the end of the paper roll, as the tell tale signs of vertical matte markings appear along the wide edge. Although mere conjecture and speculation, the most educated assumption one can arrive at, barring additional input and/or correction from the BEP, is that another portion of the plate cylinder was severely damaged causing the press operator to cancel all plates with four “Xs” on each side prior printing the sheet and presumed subsequent destruction of the entire plate cylinder rendering it unusable for additional printings. Bart commented “after nearly one-half century of studying US paper money errors, this excites me."
