$1 1977-A FRN Overprint on Back
"Natick Test Paper"
In 1981 the Treasury Dept. sought an alternate source of paper to print US paper money. Since the 1870s, the lone provider was Crane & Co. of Dalton, MA. A competitor, Natick Labs of Natick, MA, provided experimental paper to the US Treasury. The uncut sheets of Natick test paper were overprinted for the Richmond district in a narrow, well documented, serial number range. This note was printed on Natick experimental test paper then inadvertently inserted incorrectly into the overprint printing press such that the serial numbers and seals appear on the back! A bizarre happenstance of an error on an experimental and authenticated by PMG as Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ
