$1 1862 Legal Tender, Fr. 17a AMERICA'S FIRST ONE DOLLAR Salmon Chase PMG VF 30

+

America first issued a federal system of currency in 1861 with the Demand Notes. It was not until the next year where $1 notes were created....beginning with this series 1862 Legal Tender. This note features the bust of Salmon P. Chase, Secretary of the Treasury under Abraham Lincoln, 1861- 1864, and Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, 1864-1873. He is probably best known to numismatists for his causing the motto "In God We Trust" to be adopted for our national coinage.

This note has spectacular eye-appeal with bright paper and bold inks found on each side. In fact, this note is such a beautiful piece, its previous owner proudly displayed it which is responsible for the comment of 'previously mounted' with no evidence of such visible when enjoying from the face.  This particular example is from Series 46 and plate position B.
