The Tempe National Bank was the lone issuer in this tiny town that issued notes just south of Phoenix. It has since been engulfed by the greater Phoenix area. Collectors seeking a note from this bank have exacly one uncirculated example to choose from, which sold for more than $10k in a Stacks Bowers sale in 2022. A raw example that was described as a Fine 15 sold for $8625 in a Heritage sale and another crossed the auction block in a Lyn Knight sale before selling for $6325 nearly a decade ago.
The other survivors are mostly raw low-end VFs and Fine examples with problems such as pinholes, edge tears, rust, corner tears, and more. This note is positioned directly behind the Unc example with no examples in the census graded between the PMG 64EPQ and this PMG Very Fine 30EPQ for any third-party grading service. As such, this note is accurately described as the SECOND FINEST KNOWN.
It easily earned the Exceptional Paper Quality designation as the original surfaces and deep embossing are highlights of this Tempe trophy that has exactly 15 small size notes reported. A tough note offered at a tremendous value.
