Batting is a thick layer of cotton-like material that serves as a cushion for the printing plate. Improper batting occurs as a result of either not enough batting or the existing batting has fatigued and compressed. As evidenced on this example of an improper batting error, the second printing is drastically affected eliminating almost all of Washington's face.
