Description:
$1 1988 A WEB NOTE
Web notes are United States currency that
got their name from the "web printing production" method of printing
on continuous rolls of paper.
Between 1992 and 1996, the Bureau
of Engraving and Printing experimented to see if a web press that used
continuous rolls of paper was quicker and cheaper than intaglio printing, which
used flat sheets. This experiment affected $1 bills from Series 1988A, Series 1993 and Series
1995. The experimental trial was discontinued in December
1995 as the bureau could no longer afford the resolution of problems linked to
the printing operation.
These notes are identifiable by
the placement of their back plate number, which unlike intaglio printed bills
is located to the right of the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST.”
Web notes are collected in a
variety of ways, including: series, block, run, and face/ back plate
combination.
This specific example bears the
following information:
FACE PLATE: 1
BACK PLATE: 1
BLOCK: F-L
