$2 2003 Federal Reserve Notes
MINNEAPOLIS DISTRICT -- all original pack in BEP BAND;
Star notes are replacements for notes that were damaged or
misprinted during the printing process. The damaged note would be destroyed and
a new note would be printed to maintain an accurate count. Until 1910, the
replacement note would have the exact serial number (including block letters)
as the one destroyed. The BEP quickly realized this was too time consuming and
began to print a small quantity of star notes in advance of the regular issues.
Once the inspectors located a defective note, the replacement (star) note would
be inserted. In most cases, the star note would not have an identical serial
number as the one it replaced. The exception being made for high denomination
($5,000 and $10,000) Federal Reserve Notes or small size National Bank Notes. Since
these exclusions have not been printed since the 1940s, the BEP continues to
use the replacement process of printing the star notes in advance and replacing
Star notes are among the HOTTEST SEGMENTS in the CURRENCY MARKET.
