The duo of inventors, engineers and bicycle repairing brothers, Wilbur and Orville Wright, invented the first successful airplane with aircraft controls.

The American aviation pioneers made their breakthrough on December 17, 1903 at 10:30am -- the first flight in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

These stamps are AUTOGRAPHED by American illustrator and freelance artist, CHARLES R. "CHICK" CHICKERING

Chickering is known for his designs for over 77 U.S. Postal Service stamps while working at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) in Washington DC.

After being drafted into the Army, the military recognized Chickering's talents and recruited him to be an autopsy illustrator, drawing medical representations of wounded and dead soldiers during WWI. Chickering also created and designed recruitment posters for the miltary

Following the military, Chickering's work was published in many prominent  magazines such as the Saturday Evening Post, Cosmopolitan, Blue Book, Redbook, Good Housekeeping, The Country Gentleman, Liberty and Everybody's Magazine.

Chickering's artwork and designs on postage stamps gained popularity as his work is sought after by all collectors, not just stamp and postal history collectors.
