destined to highlight any collection

these were printed uni-face (front only) and intended to serve as interbank instruments to transfer funds…all available specimens resulted from a fire in a storage facility at a post office in Washington, DC in 1935 where firemen—believing that they were simply unimportant paper—threw these out on to the street to contain the fire, where passersby picked them up

99% are canceled in one fashion or another, many with grossly objectionable holes and half-moons, this has the fine hole cancelations which read “PAYABLE ONLY TO THE TREASURER OF THE U.S. OR A FEDERAL RESERVE BANK”

many, arguably most, examples come heavily water-stained from the fire hoses, this is a pleasant exception

likewise, this gorgeous high denomination retains the BOLD PEN SIGNATURE of F. J. THIEL, most examples have light or absent signatures

authenticated and conservatively graded as:

PCGS 40…with comment "Perforated Cancelled"
