$1 1988 A WEB NOTE

 

Web notes are United States currency that got their name from the "web printing production" method of printing on continuous rolls of paper. 

 

Between 1992 and 1996, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing experimented to see if a web press that used continuous rolls of paper was quicker and cheaper than intaglio printing, which used flat sheets. This experiment affected $1 bills from Series 1988ASeries 1993 and Series 1995. The experimental trial was discontinued in December 1995 as the bureau could no longer afford the resolution of problems linked to the printing operation. 

 

These notes are identifiable by the placement of their back plate number, which unlike intaglio printed bills is located to the right of the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST. 

 

Web notes are collected in a variety of ways, including: series, block, run, and face/ back plate combination.
