MISSING PRINTING
ERROR
“To properly
qualify as a missing printing error the note must have completely failed to
receive any portion of the intended design at the skipped printing stage. Notes which demonstrate even the tiniest
portion of the design originate from an alternate etiology and are not
classified as missing printings. There
are three distinct causes for a missing printing error. Most commonly, two uncut sheets of currency
stock enter the printing press simultaneously with one atop the other. The uppermost sheet accepts the imprint
normally while the lower sheet-because it is protected by the top layer-passes
through blank. Less frequently, an
entire stack of sheets is advanced to subsequent printing and/or cutting
operations after skipping a printing stage. Alternate causes of the error are
the press operator shutting down the presses in the middle of a run or the
printing plates contracting the currency paper and retracting prematurely.”
